Ernestene 'Shorty' Janes Kemp

Ernestene “Shorty” Janes Kemp, 87, of Columbia, died Friday, Oct. 21, 2016 at Signature Healthcare at Summit Manor.

She was born on Aug. 23, 1929 in Adair County to the late Galeon and Sally Keltner Janes.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claudy Kemp in 1984; a son, Willie Kemp in infancy; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Johnnie, Lewis and Bill Janes; and a sister, Ruth Burris.

She was a member of Tarter’s Chapel United Methodist Church, had worked at Osh Kosh B’Gosh and a cook at John Adair Elementary School.

She is survived by three sons, Billy (Rita) Kemp of Jamestown, Daryl (Connie) Kemp and Don (Vicki) Kemp all of Columbia; two daughters, Faye (Wendell) Burton of Columbia, Patsy Kemp of Columbia and special friend, Charles Seaborne of Campbellsville; four brothers, Ollen, Payne and Herbert Janes all of Milltown and Norman Janes of Campbellsville; four sisters, Frieda Smith of Louisville, Sue Cundiff and Phyllis Stone both of Columbia and Retter Bailey of Campbellsville.

Ten grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral service was Sunday, Oct. 23 at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home with Rev. William Davenport officiating and burial in Tarter’s Chapel Cemetery.

Ernestene’s grandsons served as casket bearers.
