One of Adair County High School’s talented seniors, Elisabeth Spoon, recently won first place in a statewide art contest, showing once again that the district’s continued support of the fine arts is paying dividends. Spoon’s hand-sculpted teapot and cup took top honors in the “3-D” division at the 2016 Kentucky Art Education Association (KyAEA) annual conference last weekend.

“I’m extremely proud of her,” says ACHS art teacher and KyAEA member Cayce Davenport, who accepted the award on Spoon’s behalf. “There was a lot of great artwork from many different high schools on display and it was judged by a panel of professional artists.”

Spoon created her work last semester in her ceramics class, starting with coils of clay, adding an octopus and starfish on each side of the pot, cutting a lid, and firing the work in a kiln. She then applied the glaze, which added color and gave an aquatic appearance. She and Ms. Davenport will enter the work in another contest in December.

Spoon plans to study cosmetology after graduation and hopes to sell her art out of her hair studio once she begins her career.
