Do you want to grow your own fresh produce as part of a community of gardeners? If so, this is your opportunity! The Columbia-Adair County Community Garden is offering raised bed plots; 8 x 8 foot in dimension, for rental for the 2016 gardening season from April 20-October 15.
Aside from use of the land, subscribers will be provided with a variety of seeds and transplants with a minimum retail value of $25, plant supports (trellis cages, stakes, etc.), and with access to a shared set of garden tools and fertilizers. “Garden Work Days” will be offered once or twice a week to facilitate your interaction with garden staff and subscribers who are elderly and/or physically handicapped will be provided with assistance planting and maintaining their plots.
All of this (land rental, plants, social interaction, and gardening assistance) is available for just $35 per year! In addition, individuals/families who fall below the poverty level can receive vouchers from the Lake Cumberland Community Action Agency to cover their rental costs.
The Community Garden is located at the intersection of West Guardian and South Monroe; directly behind the Adair County Food Pantry on property owned by the Columbia Methodist Church. The location is excellent for gardening with fertile soil, good light exposure, and water availability (courtesy the Methodist Church). To see photos of the garden and learn more about our main activities please visit our Facebook page (Columbia-Adair Community Garden).
Application forms including full seed/plant lists are available from the garden coordinator, Dr. Mike Bosela (Lindsey Wilson College) at [email protected] or by phone at 270-384-8192. The deadline for enrolling is May 15 2015, but the raised bed planters will be rented on a first come, first-serve basis so be sure to act soon to guarantee yourself a spot. Plots can be rented by individuals, families, or whole groups; e.g., boy scouts, church youth groups, etc. Transplants (tomatoes, peppers, etc.) will be available starting Monday, May 2.
