Columbia police department responded to a complaint of counterfeit money being used at a local business on Burkesville Street on Wednesday. Although the suspects had already left the store, officers were able to get descriptions of the two individuals and the vehicle they were operating. CPD Sgt. Tracy McCarol was able to locate the vehicle off of Dohoney Trace and located a large quantity of counterfeit money as well as bank checks and electronic equipment that is used to produce counterfeit bills.
29-year-old Joseph Elders of Louisville was arrested for four counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument, 1st degree. Elders also had additional warrants executed out of Jefferson County and the Kentucky State Parole Board.
Also arrested was 30-year-old Kristie Weston of Russell Springs on four counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument.
CPD believes that the duo have been spending counterfeit bills at several locations in Adair and surrounding counties over the past few months. Additional charges are pending and the investigation continues by Sgt. Tracy McCarol and officers Charles Greer and Josh Brockman.
