COLUMBIA – Adair County High School seniors Mercedes Cox and Katie Keltner were both named Honorable Mention All-State selections by the Courier-Journal. The Louisville-based newspaper published its All-State teams over the weekend.
Cox and Keltner combined to lead the Adair County girls’ basketball team to a runner-up finish behind eventual undefeated state champion Marion County in the 20th District. Following a loss to LaRue County in the opening round of the 5th Region Tournament at Green County, Adair County exited the 2012-13 season 24-9. The Lady Indians compiled the fifth-best record in the 5th Region.
Earlier in the year, Cox was invited to try out for the Kentucky All-Stars. During her senior season, Cox averaged 19.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per game for the Adair County girls’ basketball team. Cox led Adair County in both scoring and rebounding. The productive Cox shot 80.7 percent (209-of-259) from the free throw line. Cox was also reliable beyond the arc, shooting 31.8 percent (47-of-148) from 3-point range.
Both Cox and Keltner shot 43 percent from the field.
Keltner averaged 16.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for the Lady Indians. She shot 35.4 percent (28-of-79) from 3-point range.
Keltner also fared very well from the free throw line, shooting 74.6 percent (135-of-181).
Cox and Keltner played for Adair County head coach James Turner.
