Eugene “Gene” Cowan, 65, of Columbia, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017 has his home.

He was born on May 4, 1951 in Adair County and was the son of the late Ira and Pearsetta Burton Cowan.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Charlene Cowan and by two infant brothers, Kenneth and Harold Cowan; and by a daughter-in-law, Lisa Renee Cowan on Sept. 23, 2016.

He is survived by is wife, Carol Polston Cowan of Columbia; one son, Timothy “Tim” Gene Cowan of Columbia; one brother, Winfred Cowan of Columbia; three grandchildren, Jacob Stewart Cowan, Timothy “Blake” Cowan and Karli Morgan Cowan.

Several nieces, nephew and a host of other relatives and friends also survive.

Eugene loved his church and was a longtime member of Charity Baptist Church, serving as deacon.

He worked for Charles Giles for 43 years, beginning in 1967 at G & G Motors in tractor sales. He worked six years for Hobdy, Dye and Read in Columbia and retired on July 31, 2016. He was owner of Cowan Farming and Shop and he pursued farming and his personal farm equipment sales. He was an avid farm equipment auction attender.

Funeral service was Friday, April 14 at Charity Baptist Church with Bro. David Karnes, Bro. Jim Hagan and George Rice officiating with interment in Haven Hill Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy are suggested to Charity Baptist Church building fund or Gideon Bibles and may be left at the funeral home or Charity Baptist Church.

Pallbearers were Blake Cowan, Jacob Cowan, Jamie Cowan, Brady Cowan, Carley Fudge and Benton Fudge.

Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
