Garnett Kessler, 92, of the Portland community, died Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at his home.

He was born on Aug. 6, 1924 in Adair County and was the son of the late Daniel Chester and Lena Shuffett Kessler.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Edwards Kessler; his daughter, Glenda Kessler; and by two brothers, Chester and L. C. Kessler.

Garnett was a member of Pickett’s Chapel United Methodist Church, a retired farmer with Kessler Jerseys, a member of the American Jersey Cattle Association and operated Kessler’s Grocery with his wife for many years.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Linda Kessler of Portland and Donald and Christy Kessler of Somerset; one sister, Carolyn Finn of Columbia; five grandchildren, Eddie (Tiffany) Kessler, Kevin (Arlinda) Kessler, Timothy, Holly and Lauren Kessler; and by seven great grandchildren, Jeremy Phillips, Alexis, Jeralyn, Kyla, Colin, Keaton and Kasey Blue Kessler.

Funeral service was Saturday, May 13 at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home with Bro. Pat Smith and Bro. Herbert Janes officiating with burial in Columbia Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Garnett Kessler Memorial Fund, which the family will distribute to Garnett’s favorite charities. These may be made at the funeral home.

Casket bearers were Donald, Eddie, Kevin, Timothy, Colin, Keaton and Kasey Blue Kessler and Jeremy Phillips.

Honorary casket bearers were the men of Pickett’s Chapel Church and Portland community.
