The Adair County Indians were able to advance to the 20th district championship with a 84-76 win against Marion County last week. The win gave the Indians a season sweep of the Knights after winning both regular season games and a post-season match-up.
“We had a good team performance for the majority of the game,” says head coach Deron Breeze. “We let up at the end and let them make it close, we have to cut that out from here on out because that can get you beat.”
At one point, Adair led Marion by more than 20 points, but late game turnovers and quick shots allowed the Knights to slowly cut the lead to single digits.
Zion Harmon led the Tribe with 26 points and seven assists while Corey Melton added 21 points with six rebounds. Hunter Cundiff had one of his best games of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds; Cundiff always plays hard and he set the tone against the Knights in this opening round game. Dre Boyd contributed with 13 points and six rebounds while Blane Frazier added four points while also playing great defense throughout the entire game.
Adair won this game without starting guard Anthony Payne who rolled his ankle during practice earlier in the week. Coach Breeze expects him to be back soon, hopefully in time for the region tournament.
“We took care of business and now we have a shot at region,” says Breeze. “We have to keep bringing a defensive mentality to every game and we can’t allow teams to come back on us if we get up big.”
