Lorraine Parks, 96, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of the Crocus community in Russell County, passed away on Nov. 1, 2016 in Chicago, Ill.

She was the daughter of the late Rev. Lucian Jones of Cedar Grove Baptist Church and Margaret Stone Jones. She was the seventh of twelve children.

She graduated from Jackman High School in Columbia class of 1939 and Kentucky State University in Frankfort where she earned two bachelor degrees in education class of 1944.

She was an educator in the Chicago Public Schools, she also owned Hurd’s Cleaners for years and ran multiple locations until 1979. She was a member of many organizations; Eastern Star, The Nous Sevon Club, the Goodwill Club, St. Bernard, Little Company of Mary, Larabida Children’s Hospital and the Salvation Army.

She joined Saint John Baptist Church in 1950 and continued serving the Lord there the rest of her days.

She is survived by one son, Herschel Hurd Jr.; grandchildren, Cordell Cherry Jr., Marcus Breauz, Sonya Breaux, Sharon Miles, Michael Cherry, Anthony Cherry, Zeobei Hurd, Shonny Pickens, Terry Johnson, Eden Hurd, Tony Hughs, Penny Herd and host of great grandchildren.

Funeral service was Tuesday, Dec. 6 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Harold Stone officiating and interment in the Stone-Hones Cemetery.

Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
