A Knifley man died Tuesday night after he apparently rode a motorized wheelchair into the highway and was struck by a vehicle.
Jerry Giles, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene after the accident occurred around 5:50 p.m. Tuesday. He was on Elkhorn Road 13 miles north of Columbia when he was struck by a 1997 Chevy pickup being operated by Randel Gabehart, of Knifley.
Kentucky State Police reported that Giles is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, according to Trooper Andy Olson. No criminal charges are expected against Gabehart, Olson said.
Trooper Olson is leading the investigation. The coroner’s office, Knifley Fire Department, sheriff’s office, EMS and Search and Rescue also responded to the scene.
