Mrs. Mary Ann Mathews, age 70 of Franklin, KY and formerly of Columbia, KY passed away Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 9:00 AM at her residence.

Arrangements are under the direction of Gilbert Funeral Home, Franklin, KY where services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, June 19, 2019 with burial to follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin, KY

Mary Ann was born August 18, 1948 in  Adair Co., KY to the late Stanley Downey and the late Nellie Lee Cox Downey. She was the wife of the late James Russell “Shadetree” Mathews.  She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law Louise Mathews and father-in-law J.B. Mathews.

She is survived by her son Chuck Porter (Michelle) of Franklin, KY, brother Dr. Max Downey (Patricia) of Columbia, KY, 2 nieces Laura Brummett and Erin Eubank, 2 nephews Brian Downey and Chris Collins, 2 sister-in-laws Linda Parker Taylor and Paulette Wildemone both of Robertson Co., TN, a brother-in-law Larry Mathews (Joyce) of Robertson Co., TN, several other nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Mary Ann was a member of the Franklin First United Methodist Church. She was a retired teacher in the Simpson County school system.  She was a graduate of Western Kentucky University with a BS in Elementary Education, a Masters in Elementart Education and a Rank 1 in School Administration.  She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Soroity.  She was a coach for the Franklin-Simpson Girls’ Golf Team.  She served as a Board Member for the Franklin-Simpson Education Excellence Foundation Board.  She belonged to the Simpson County Retired Teachers Association and the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association.  She was an Interim Principal at Lincoln Elementary.  She was also a Real Estate Agent.

Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday, June 18, 2019 and from 6:00 AM until service time on Wednesday at Gilbert Funeral Home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Friends of the Shelter in Simpson Co. KY.
