ORIGINAL REPORT (Sunday, 9 a.m.):

Local emergency services were called to Russell Road several miles out of Columbia just after 1 a.m. Sunday after a man walking in the roadway was struck by a car and died.

A motorist called 911 and reported that a man had been hit and was believed to be dead. After emergency services responded to the scene, the coroner’s office was called.

EMS transported a 53-year-old male to Westlake Regional Hospital who had been the driver of the vehicle. The driver was transported after being traumatized from the accident and suffering from high blood pressure. He also had minor cuts from broken glass.

Hwy. 80 was closed for several hours following the accident. The accident happened at a dangerous spot in Hwy. 80 where a rise in the roadway limited visibility.

Kentucky State Police, Adair County Sheriff’s Office, Adair EMS and the coroner’s office responded to the scene.
