This year’s Relay for Life will take place Friday in the Holloway Health and Wellness Center, and everyone involved is as excited as ever. “Relay for Life has always been about the survivors,” says chairman Peggy Lawson, “and we want our 20th year of Relay to really drive that home.” This year’s theme is Curing Cancer Around the World, and to celebrate the 14 Relay teams will decorate the night with international ornaments from Mexico to Ireland.
While in the past the events lasted all night, they now last from 6 pm to 12 am. The night’s events consist of entertainment and games by several community members as well as several ceremonies in honor of cancer survivors. As well as selling refreshments throughout the night, Relay for Life will also be selling hope stones for $20 to put loved one’s names on.
Out of the funds raised Friday, 72 percent will go to cancer research while the rest will go to funding education according to Lawson. Last year $47,000 was raised through roadblocks, auctions, bake sales, and other events. This year their goal is $50,000 and they have raised $19,000 so far.
