severe weather

Multiple rounds of strong to severe storms are possible from overnight tonight through Thursday afternoon.

Tonight, a strong low pressure system will lift a warm front northward through the region late tonight, resulting in showers and scattered thunderstorms overnight, Best precipitation chances likely come around or after midnight, with hail as the main threat. Damaging winds and tornado risk are limited tonight, but conditions could evolve that would support better chances for these two hazards.

Thursday, the convective outlook has been upgraded to an Enhanced Risk for severe weather – a level three out of five. Thunderstorms will be ongoing at daybreak tomorrow morning, but we’ll likely see a break in storm activity by the late morning hours. The main window for severe weather comes Thursday afternoon ahead of the approaching cold front, where damaging winds will be the primary hazard, but hail and tornadoes are also on the table. The cold front will pass through the region from west to east, pushing all severe weather hazards out of our area by the early evening. Areas west of I-65 will be clear of severe weather much earlier than areas to the east.
