The Adair County Middle School football team turned around their luck from the previous week when they played Casey County in a home game last Thursday. When the final buzzer sounded, the middle schoolers had won by nearly double their competition’s points, going 32 to 15.
The Indians’ win was predicated on improvements from both the offensive line and the defensive line. Last week’s game against Monroe County was lost in large part due to Monroe’s tight control over the line of scrimmage. So, in a change of fate (and hard work on the boys’ parts), their game against Casey County saw the middle schoolers fight hard to maintain the line.
“I thought we played well on both sides of the line. Our offensive line really improved their blocking and the defensive line did a great job controlling the line of scrimmage. That was really the key to getting the win,” Head Coach Wes Stephens said of the game. “We had a great night rushing the ball and our pass game was really effective when we needed it.”
Coach Stephens paid particular compliment to player Parker Jessie, who he says did well with both running and receiving. While the team tries to split ball duty evenly amongst players, the way most games turn out, “it seems like one guy tends to have a big night every game,” Coach Stephens said.
The game kicked off when the middle schoolers were able to create early turnovers, which quickly helped them establish a firm lead over the opposition. “Once the clock started running, they got a couple of scores but the game was never in doubt. We just have to stay aggressive and tackle well on defense if we want to be a good football team. There’s always something we can improve on,” Coach Stephens said.
