Former Columbia Police Chief Edwin Taylor died in a tragic accident Tuesday afternoon at his home.
Adair County Sheriff’s Deputy Gary Roy said the sheriff’s department and EMS were called out to Taylor’s home on Creek Bend Drive around 1:30 p.m. with a report that a male had been hit by an automobile.
When they arrived they determined that Taylor had the hood of his pickup truck up and had been standing in front of it when it started rolling, knocking him down as it traveled down his driveway.
Taylor was police chief for more than two decades, retiring in 2003. He also served two terms on the Columbia City Council.
Mayor Pam Hoots served her first term as mayor with Taylor as police chief.
“He was a great police chief. He was a mentor; I was coming in as a new mayor. He was very supportive. He cared about Columbia. He cared about the police department, and he cared about our community,” Hoots said. “This is a great loss for our community.”
