Happy Haunting: Have a safe and fun HALLOWEEN!

Posted

Thursday is Halloween—one of the biggest celebrations of the year. Everyone can enjoy Halloween with scary movies and costumes, but Halloween’s most seminal tradition—trick or treating—is most popular among the holiday’s younger fans.
As such, it is important to be mindful of safety while trick or treating.
“I would go to people you trust or you know, neighborhoods you live in… neighborhoods you know, your friends know… go to someone you trust,” police chief Evan Burton said.
Halloween candy being tampered with is a fear of many parents. While poisoned candy is largely a myth with very few reported cases of it recorded, it never hurts to check any food being eaten.
Instead of candy, the biggest safety concern during Halloween is the increased and younger pedestrian presence. Chief Burton emphasized visibility, saying to bring a flashlight or a glowstick, or to try and remain in well-lit areas. Drivers should also drive slower and be cognizant of children walking who may not be minding the road. Parents can talk to their kids about road safety and encourage costumes that are high-visibility for drivers.
For adults on Halloween, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says if you plan to attend a party, just like always, do not drink and drive. Choose a designated driver or arrange for a ridesharing service beforehand. Hosts should collect car keys from those who are intoxicated.
“Most importantly have fun, use common sense, and stay safe,” Chief Burton said. He also stated the police would have a presence at the square’s Treats on the Town and throughout the city that night to ensure everyone can focus on enjoying the night.
