The Adair County Indians scored two wins this week against both Russell and Central Hardin, resetting the boys’ winning streak after last week’s loss to Warren Central.
Part of a double-header event where the girls also claimed a victory against Russell County, Friday night’s game ended with the Indians winning by over 20 points. The final score was 78 to 57.
Adair’s win can be attributed to the boys scoring almost every free throw that they attempted. There were 16 attempts and 14 balls in the basket, netting the boys an 87.5% accuracy rating. The Lakers held a 70% free throw score, though their averages for field goals were far worse than the Indians, who kept a nearly 50% for total field goals and 40% for three pointers. The 40% for three-pointers could certainly be improved, but it was more than enough to edge out the Lakers’ 26.9%.
Dawson Gilbert can also be given credit for the win, as well as numerous other players. The junior athlete scored 18 points spread across two two-point field goals, four three-point field goals, and two free-throws. Connor Loy made four of eight attempted two-pointers and five of his five attempted free-throws, earning 13 points for the Indians. Loy’s 13 points were tied with Isaiah Cochran who made two of his four two-pointers, two of his four three-pointers, and three of four free-throw attempts. Gilbert, Loy, Trinton Breeze, and Matthew MeJean (two sophomores) scored every free-throw they shot.
At the Central Hardin matchup on Monday night, the boys scored a win of 80 to 74. This was a comeback win for the Indians who began the game down and worked their way back up to a respectable six-point victory. Central Hardin threatened to close the gap several times, once closing an eight-point lead against them to two points in only a few plays.
Similarly to the Russell County game, Connor Loy, Dawson Gilbert, and Isaiah Cochran were the top scorers against Central Hardin. Connor Loy was on top with 20 points netted for the Indians. These came in the form of seven (out of ten attempted) two-pointers and six out of seven free-throws. The senior had Gilbert close behind with 19 points made up of four two-pointers, three three-pointers, and two free-throws. Cochran was only two points behind Gilbert, scoring 17 points. He had six two-pointers, a three-pointer, and he made both free-throws he attempted. Carter white scored 11 points, Brayton Coomer scored 9, and Solomon Stonebraker and Lane Grant both netted two points each.
The Indians will next be up against Mercer County this Friday in an away game. After that, they will start district play on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m. against Campbellsville. This will be a home game. If they win (which appears likely as they are ranked as the top team in the district), they will go on to face either Taylor County or Marion County on Friday, Feb. 28.
