LOUISVILLE, Ky. (August 21, 2024) – Looking ahead to a jam-packed Thursday at the Kentucky State Fair, fair officials and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture are anticipating record-breaking participation in the annual Sunshine Livestock Class on Thursday, August 22 at 4 p.m. in Broadbent Arena with more than 60 participants. The Sunshine Class offers an opportunity for individuals with special needs to work in a show ring at the Kentucky State Fair. Working with a mentor, the exhibitor will show the animal and at the end, all are presented with a championship banner.
“The Sunshine Class is a prime example of what the Kentucky State Fair is all about. Our team celebrates the opportunity to not only invite those from around the state to experience the fair as a guest, but also participate in livestock showing on the green shavings within the ring as an exhibitor. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity made possible by the vision and cooperation of so many partners who aim to make the fair welcoming and memorable for everyone,” said David S. Beck, President & CEO of Kentucky Venues.
To put on a record-breaking event, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture partnered with Special Olympics Kentucky to raise awareness for the upcoming event.
“As Commissioner of Agriculture, I am proud to support the Sunshine Class at the Kentucky State Fair. This special event is a shining example of how agriculture and community come together to uplift and empower everyone in our great Commonwealth. The dedication and joy of the participants inspire us all, reminding us that agriculture truly is for everyone,” said Jonathan Shell, Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture.
