The Adair County Grand Jury returned indictments against Jennifer Russell, 33, and Derrick Neathery, 37, both of Russell Springs, on counts of manslaughter, 1st degree, in connection with the death of a five week old infant in October of 2017.
In late Oct. 2017, 911 received a call from a mother about her unresponsive one-month-old baby who was not breathing. EMS responded to the scene on Montpelier Road and requested the coroner’s office and the sheriff’s office.
Both Russell and Neathery were arrested on Friday by Adair County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Aaron Rainwater and Kentucky State Police Trooper Levi Scott. Both were lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail, Russell’s bond was set at $50,000 cash while Neathery’s bond was set at $20,000 cash. Deputy Aaron Rainwater is in charge of the investigation.
When asked by a Community Voice reporter the details of the autopsy report, deputy Rainwater said that he could not release any other details at this time due to ongoing investigation.
“This is still an ongoing investigation,” says deputy Rainwater. “I presented the case to the grand jury and they felt there was enough evidence to return an indictment for manslaughter, 1st degree but that is all the information I can release at this time.”
Rainwater confirmed that Russell is the mother of the deceased infant and that it is believed that Neathery is the father but it is unknown at this time, however Neathery was playing a parenting role to the infant.
