Five senior welding students at Adair County High School spent a day last month job shadowing at INFAC North America, Inc. in Campbellsville, Ky. The students – Preston Coomer, Evan Darnell, Mason Franklin, Elliot Hare, and Adam Roberts – were just a few of the many in the Class of ’17 who forewent their regular schedules for a day and instead took a peek into life after high school, observing work environments that match their career paths.
“Getting kids into a job setting gives them something we can’t duplicate here in a classroom,” says ACHS college and career readiness counselor Robin Loy. “It’s a good opportunity to network and build those contacts in the workforce.”
The five who visited INFAC were allowed to meet face-to-face with general manager Brian Bland, turned in resumes, and learned about the many career opportunities at the company. They had previously toured the facility with the rest of their welding class.
“This is a win-win for everyone because [INFAC] gets to meet with potential future employees, the students get to learn about a job they might be interested in, and we – as a school – get feedback about how to improve curriculum for resumes, cover letters, and interviews,” Loy says. “We’re glad our students get this chance because they’re able to get out and see what makes a good employee. We hope to continue this relationship and continue to build more with local businesses and industries.”
