Adair County teacher Denise Grant was beginning to look at retirement options after 23 years of working in education when the opportunity to not only teach but have a direct hand in helping students graduate fell into her lap. Grant has officially taken on the role as the Jobs for America’s Graduates specialist for Adair County High School and is working with JAG Kentucky and colleagues to implement the program locally.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Kentucky State Director Dr. Tom Carew today announced the availability of grants to help communities repair essential community facilities damaged by presidentially declared disasters in 2022.

Bailey Watts recently attended the Rogers Scholars Program and was awarded the Doug Reece Memorial Scholarship for having the highest application score of her 2023 class of scholars.  

In recent years, the population of invasive and toxic weeds such as poison hemlock has been growing in Adair County. Recently, sweet vernal grass has begun to take over many hay fields. Common groundsel and perilla mint are two weeds to also keep an eye on, as their presence is growing.

On Monday, July 10, 2023, at approximately 2:52 A.M, Kentucky State Police, Post 13, Hazard, received a 911 call in reference to a two motorcycle accident, in the Amburgey community of Knott County.

Adair County will celebrate two decades of Downtown Days this fall, and the event promises to be one for the record books as a locally grown nationally successful band takes the stage. The Downtown Days committee announced this past week that the Kentucky Headhunters will be the featured band on Saturday, Oct. 14.

FRANKFORT ­­— The Kentucky General Assembly continues to monitor Kentucky’s juvenile justice system following the 2023 legislative session. The Juvenile Justice Oversight Council held its first meeting of the 2023 interim period on Friday. The council is co-chaired by Sen. Whitney Westerfield, R-Fruit Hill, and Rep. Daniel Elliott, R-Danville. The other legislators on the council are Sen. Danny Carroll, R-Benton; Sen. Robin L. Webb, D-Grayson; Rep. Kevin D. Bratcher, R-Louisville; and Rep. Keturah Herron, D-Louisville.

The effort to shift Americans to electric vehicles has a big obstacle: unreliable charging stations. In rural areas, that's a bigger problem, because rural stations are in short supply. More than one in five EV users report that they have been unable to find a station at one time or another, and the number is rising as EVs become more common, according to surveys by J.D. Power.

VFW Post 6097 hosted a ceremony Sunday to remember Adair County citizens who died serving their country in the military. US Army CWO-4 (retired) Russell Lunsford was the guest speaker before the crowd went outside for a laying of wreaths ceremony.

Eva Iqbal shared her time and talent with visitors of the Farmers’ Market on the Square Saturday by selling lemonade as a fundraiser. She raised $475 for the Stella Effect, a non-profit group that supports families who have a child with Trisomy 18 or 13, a life-limiting diagnosis.

The Adair County Sportsman Club has been interwoven into the community for many years, but the group started from humble beginnings all the way back to the 1950s.
