Adair County Wrestling has been working on preseason conditioning and are ready to start practice this week. Head Coach Abe Cross and Assistant Coaches Josh Furkin and Derek Nickel are ready to get this program going. This is the first year for the program and the coaches are excited to be bringing a new sport to Adair County Athletics. “We are excited. All of us” said Cross.
Wrestling is a sport for anyone. Fourth grade through high school can participate; both males and females of any height or weight. No try-outs will be held; there is a place on the team for everyone. The only requirement to begin practice is to have a current sports physical to give to the coaches.
Practice officially began on Wednesday, Oct. 15. There will be practice tonight at 5 p.m. and anyone who is interested in joining the team is encouraged to come.
“We are having a consistent amount somewhere around twenty each time give or take,” said Cross. “It’s been down to sixteen and up to twenty-five participating in the preseason workouts.
“We will start with foundational pieces, positional pieces that we will build from so it’s going to be like building a sandcastle. We get a strong base and build from there,” he said.
Looking ahead at the season and schedule, Cross says, “We’ve got a great competition schedule lined up against some other teams that are fairly new so hopefully we can see some success early on. I’m really excited to get going and build the foundation of Adair County Wrestling”.
As of now, there are three meets scheduled at home -Thursday, Dec. 4, Tuesday, Dec 9, Friday, Jan 16 for high school and Thursday, Jan 22 for middle school. The schedule is not finalized.
