Adair County wrestling made history Thursday, Dec. 4, as the middle school hosted the program’s first-ever meet. Wrestlers from the middle and high school teams competed against Marion County.
What began as a brand-new program has quickly turned into one of the county’s most popular sports. In its first season, 51 students have strapped on headgear and embraced the challenge of the mat.
The historic first individual win came from varsity wrestler Keylin Bergin, who delivered a pinfall that drew many cheers from both her teammates and fans. That triumph set the tone for the rest of the duals.
For many, the meet also served as an introduction to the sport.
Wrestling matches are divided into three two-minute periods, and athletes earn points for takedowns, escapes, reversals and near falls. A match can end early with a pin, or, if time runs out, the wrestler with the most points wins. Those individual results determine the team scoring, which ranges from three points for a decision up to six points for a pinfall.
On Thursday night, the points added up quickly for the home team.
Adair County defeated Marion County 78–32, racking up a list of individual victories.
Coaches praised not just the wins, but the energy, effort and sportsmanship shown by the team.
The program’s momentum continues tonight, as Adair County heads to Russell County for a 5:30 p.m. meet.
