Columbia will set aside the week of Sept. 8-12 to honor Lindsey Wilson University with a series of events highlighting the institution’s contributions to the community.
Mayor Pamela Hoots announced the celebration, noting the university’s importance to the city and region.
“We are fortunate to have Lindsey Wilson University in our community,” Hoots said. “Our university, our students, our community.”
The week will feature daily themes showcasing different aspects of the university, from its economic impact to its athletics, diversity, and student experiences. Mayor Hoots signed a proclamation Tuesday to officially designate the period as Lindsey Wilson University Week in Columbia.
The schedule of events is as follows:
• Monday, Sept. 8: Focus on the university’s economic impact in Columbia and Adair County.
Mayor Hoots will interview Larry Walker, chairman of the local Economic Development Board, who will share statistics on the university’s role in the local economy.
• Tuesday, Sept. 9: Spotlight on Lindsey Wilson athletics, including an overview of sports programs and recognition of championship titles and awards.
• Wednesday, Sept. 10: Emphasis on diversity, with an interview at the International Center.
• Thursday, Sept. 11: Paint the Town Blue day. Residents and businesses are encouraged to wear blue, decorate storefronts, and share messages of support. Sidewalks around town will be painted in Lindsey Wilson blue. That afternoon, Mayor Hoots will visit campus to meet and greet students.
• Friday, Sept. 12: Conversations with students about their journeys to Columbia and their experiences at Lindsey Wilson University.
Mayor Hoots encourages the public to take part in the celebration.
“We hope that the community will get involved and support the university this week,” she said. Videos featuring conversations between Mayor Hoots and others will be posted throughout the week on the mayor’s and LWU’s social media pages. Blue Raider Bob will also be spotted around Columbia and everyone is encouraged to photograph the events and share on social media.
