Bridget Compton has filed as a write-in candidate to run for County Judge Executive in the November General Election.
Compton, who as a write-in candidate is non-partisan, will be running against Republican Chris Reeder and Democrat Todd D. Davenport. Reeder won the primary in May to represent the Republican party after defeating incumbent Larry Russell Bryant and former Judge Executive Gale Cowan. Davenport ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.
Compton currently serves as administrative assistant and deputy judge executive.
Winning any election as a write-in candidate is difficult to do. Candidates are not listed on the ballot, and no signs are posted or any notifications provided at voting precincts. Voters may request to see a copy of a list of write-in candidates, and they will be shown one for review. The list must then be returned to the poll worker. Two election officers may instruct a voter on how to cast a write-in vote upon request.
The most recent write-in candidates in local races came in the 2014 general election.
Ben Arnold ran an aggressive campaign as he ran as a write-in for mayor in the November 2014 general election. In that race, Curtis Hardwick won, receiving 562 votes. Arnold received 383 votes and June Parson received 328 votes. After allegations of irregularities, the Adair Circuit Court voided the results, but the Kentucky Court of Appeals reversed the decision.
J. Brandon Thompson ran as a write-in for Property Valuation Administrator the same year after long-time incumbent Jr. Feese unexpectedly dropped out at the last hour and his son, Jeffrey Feese, filed. Feese, a Democrat, won the race with 3478 votes, with Thompson receiving 1994 votes.
The general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3. Deadline to file as a write in-candidate is Aug. 24.
