Nine candidates will vie for six city council seats, and one school board race will be contested in November’s General Election.
The filing deadline for nonpartisan races, including mayor, city council, school board and soil conservation district supervisor, was 4 p.m. Tuesday.
The most contested local race will be for Columbia City Council, where five incumbents and four new candidates have filed for the six seats. City residents may vote for up to six candidates, and the candidates who receive the highest cumulative vote totals take office.
Incumbents Craig Dean, Mark Harris, Sharon Payne, Hanna Peck and Ronald “Butch” Rogers are seeking reelection. Incumbent Rhonda Loy did not file for reelection. They will be joined on the ballot by Andrea Burke, Charles Grimsley, Beverly Loy and Richard Swartz.
Incumbent Mayor Pamela Hoots is unopposed and will appear alone on the ballot.
In school board races, District 1 incumbent Terry Harvey will face challenger Cassie Burns. District 3 incumbent Destiny Greer is unopposed.
The Adair County Soil Conservation District Board has three seats on the ballot and three people have filed. Incumbents Julie A. Day, Jay Melton and Danny R. Wilkinson each refiled. They will not appear on the ballot.
Two countywide partisan races will be contested in November.
Republican Chris Reeder and Democrat Todd Davenport will compete for the office of Adair County judge executive.
For District 3 magistrate, Republican Todd Smith will face Democrat James E. Bennett.
The county’s other magistrates are all Republican and unopposed. Those candidates are Tony Denton, Chris Janes, Chad Brown, Richard Phelps, James Eaton and Greg Caldwell.
Republican Gary Roy, a candidate for sheriff, and Republican Nadalie Inscho, a candidate for county clerk, each won the primary race and will appear on the November ballot.
District Judge for the 29th Judicial District is a nonpartisan office. Incumbent Michael Loy is unopposed.
Republican Jennifer Hutchison Corbin is unopposed for county attorney, Republican Landon Edwards is unopposed for property valuation administrator, Republican Michael McKinney is unopposed for surveyor, Republican Patricia Robin Lewis is unopposed for coroner and Republican Buddy Powell is unopposed for jailer. These candidates did not have opposition in the primary election, but will appear on the ballot in the general election.
All constable candidates are Republicans and unopposed and will appear on the ballot in their respective districts. They are William Bill Troutwine, Brandon Lee Willis, Kennith Hill, Jeffrey K. Dickson, Tim Bottoms, Jason T. Rector and Charles Esch.
