In a brief monthly meeting of the Columbia City Council Monday, several topics were mentioned. Spring blacktopping, codes enforcement and conducting further research on the possibility of a sports complex were all brought to the table.
Mayor Pam Hoots told the council that several people have requested a sports complex in Columbia. She said that there are not any grants available for land purchase, but there are various grants available for building a sports complex.
“I wanted to ask and send a letter to see if EDA would be willing to give us any type of land on the far side, not where they are developing, but on the other side,” said Hoots. “That we could possibly start a project.”
Council member Craig Dean made a motion to further research the matter. The motion passed unanimously.
Hoots also told the council that John Harris is now the codes enforcement officer. City Attorney Mike Harris said that he and John are working through the paperwork on properties located on Mitchell Street, Jamestown Street, and Greensburg Street. The paperwork to move forward in the legal process should be completed within the next two weeks.
Spring blacktopping will be advertised for Parkway Manor Avenue, Sunny Hill Drive, Garrett Street, Hughes Street, Progress Drive, Pittman Street and Travis Street.
Hoots said that she had several businesses interested in the Synergy Food Group location. The building should be vacated by May 1 and she is optimistic that another business will locate there soon.
