The Adair County Indians secured their spot in the playoffs on Indian Field Friday night with a 21 point win over Butler County.
The victory came on Senior Night after 10 seniors were recognized for their contribution to the team.
“Our offensive execution was better than it has been all season. 35 points is a really good night and we had opportunities to score a couple of more touchdowns,” said Head Coach Bryan Cross. “We got inside the 10-yard line on two drives and came away with no points. We have to cut down on silly penalties and be more productive in the red zone.”
The Indians’ offensive charge was led by senior Ryder Rodgers, who continued his standout season with his second straight 100-yard performance and four touchdowns.
“Senior Ryder Rodgers had another big night running the football,” said Cross. “He had a lot of yards after catch tonight – he’s a strong young man and tends to push the pile.”
On the defensive side, Mahlon Coblentz was a force to be reckoned with.
“Mahlon Coblentz, another senior, had a huge night defensively. Those performances don’t always show up in the stats but when teams begin to purposefully run away from you, you’re having a big impact on the game,” he said.
“Arthur Harper, also a senior, played a great game at defensive end and outside linebacker coming up with his first career interception and returning it about 30 yards,” said Cross.
Cross said that Dawson Gilbert and Tristen Stotts, both seniors, who joined the team this season, made huge contributions to the team’s success with their play and leadership.
Ryker Musselman’s determination did not go unnoticed. Musselman played with an injury all season and fought to help the team.
“Senior Seamus Cook has improved at the center position all year and played well,” said Cross.
He also commended Brayden Stargel for his work on special teams and defense, and Camden Streeval for his attitude and willingness to help wherever needed.
Defensively, turnovers made the difference.
“Turnovers are a huge part of the story Friday night. Our guys forced five turnovers, something we’ve emphasized all season,” he said. “Callum Darnell made two really athletic plays to come up with two interceptions. Arthur Harper and Tristan Mullins each had a pick and Brayden Bennett recovered a fumble. Our guys did a great job coming up with those.”
Before the game, the focus was on the senior class. Ten young men who have helped shape the identity of the program were recognized.
“I want to thank the seniors again for their contributions to Indian football,” Cross said. “They all played and contributed to a win in their final game on this field. They’ve helped lay a foundation for success here. Hopefully, they’ve gained some lessons in work ethic, teamwork, resiliency and keeping a competitive spirit that will help move them forward in life as adults. These ten young men have been so much fun to compete with and to teach.”
The season is not over for the Indians. They play a non-conference game Friday night at Campbellsville with kickoff at 7 p.m. cst.
Adair is matched against Murray in the playoffs. That game will be held at Murray on Friday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. cst.
