Lynn Franklin remembered for service and kindness

Local businessman Lynn Franklin, 53, died Thursday, May 21, after a battle with cancer.
Franklin owned and operated Lynn’s Service on Jamestown Street for 20 years and was known not only for his mechanical skills, but also for his caring and considerate nature.
“He was the most kind and loving person to me. He gave me the world. For the public, he was also kind and truthful,” said his wife, Pheobie Franklin.
Franklin opened the business in September 1996, offering a service station and 24-hour wrecker service. He operated the business six days a week, providing around-the-clock towing service to the community. In 2015, Franklin received the Business/Industry Award from the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce.
Over the years, Lynn’s Service Center became a fixture in the community, remaining the last full-service gas station in Columbia.
Customers often stopped by to have their gas pumped, oil and tires checked or simply to visit with Franklin. The business is currently closed, but Pheobie plans to re-open June 1 to continue with Franklin’s legacy.
His son, Wyatt, said Franklin was his best friend and taught him everything he knows. His daughter, Heather, said he gave her unconditional love and was always there for her.
“My dad was a gentle soul with a huge heart who would do anything to help anyone,” said his daughter, Shelby King. “He showed me how to be a good person and how to make it in this world. I will always miss his teasing and laughter.”
Franklin was known for his quick wit and sense of humor. If he was teasing someone, they knew he liked them.
“He was the fixer. He was always there to listen – offer advice. Whatever any of us needed, he was there and would try his hardest to fix not only our vehicles, but life’s endeavors too,” said Haley Scott. “He loved me when he didn’t have to. He chose to be my bonus dad. I’ll always be thankful for him.”
