One of Adair County’s historical country stores was damaged during a single vehicle accident on Sunday. Alex Tidwell, 20, of Columbia, lost control of a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe around 11:51 a.m. and the vehicle landed on its side at Hardscratch General Store.
Tidwell told Deputy Nick Barber that he was traveling on Hwy. 55 south in the Glensfork community when he lost control of his vehicle. Tidwell was transported to T.J. Health Columbia for treatment. Deputy Barber said that rainfall prior to the accident was likely a contributing factor.
The store sustained moderate damage and will be closed until repairs can be made.
Tim and Sherry Kelly are the owners of the store. Hardscratch General Store has been open since the 1930s.
“It pushed the front wall, busted the window out, and about tore the corner off the building. It wiped out the diesel pump and the gas pump at the front,” said Tim Kelly.
“My wife and I would like to thank the Adair County Sheriff’s Department and the Adair County Fire Department for their kindness and response to the accident. Phillip Richard, one of the volunteer firefighters, went above and beyond to help us get caps and cap off the fuel tanks. We really appreciate him doing that,” said Tim.
