Small town, big celebration

The sounds of laughter, cheering and celebration filled the Adair County Fairgrounds Saturday as the first Independence on the Grounds brought families together as the country celebrated 250 years of independence.
The event marked the return of Family Fun Games after a 10-year hiatus, giving families the opportunity to compete in a variety of challenges for a chance at the $500 grand prize.
The winning team consisted of Catherine Spencer, Beverly Bacon, Laura Spencer and Mikey Spencer.
“While we did not receive the turnout we were hoping for, the family fun day was so much fun,” said Dan Scott, Adair Fair reporter. “Like any newly brought back event, there were some growing pains that will ultimately give us a better event next year.”
Scott expressed appreciation to the businesses, fair board members and community members who helped make the event possible.
The celebration continued with a cruise in block party at Priceless IGA parking lot, where car enthusiasts brought a variety of vehicles for attendees to enjoy.
The night ended with a fireworks display sponsored by the City of Columbia and Adair County Fiscal Court. The fireworks were held for the first time at the Joe Johnson Little League park.
Crowds gathered at the nearby fairgrounds and along Jamestown Street, with many attendees saying the display drew one of the largest crowds they had seen in recent years.
From family competitions to classic cars and fireworks lighting up the sky, the community came together to celebrate the Fourth of July and the 250th anniversary of the United States.
