Trooper Island, a free summer camp located on a secluded 34-acre island on Dale Hollow Lake, hosts children ages 10 to 12 from across Kentucky. Approximately 700 children attend the camp each year. Campers, often from disadvantaged backgrounds, are selected by troopers and through referrals from Family Resource and Youth Services Centers.
This year, children from the Post 15 area will travel to the island on June 15 for a week of activities that include swimming, fishing, archery and other outdoor recreation opportunities.
The camp is designed to build confidence, teach teamwork and foster positive relationships between youth and law enforcement. Troopers and civilian personnel often develop mentoring relationships with campers that continue beyond their week at camp.
“Trooper Island is a great place to give kids a chance to go to camp. Many of these kids have had experiences where troopers were involved and it gives troopers a chance to interact with these kids in a positive way,” said Public Affairs Officer Jonathon Houk.
Founded in 1965, Trooper Island has continued to grow over the years, expanding its programs and resources. Everyone involved is committed to providing a positive summer camp experience for children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a summer camp.
As a nonprofit organization, Trooper Island is funded through donations and fundraising efforts conducted by Kentucky State Police throughout the year. Donations to the program are tax-deductible.
Post 15 is currently collecting supplies for this year's campers. Needed items include beach towels, bath towels, Twin XL sheets (blue or pink if possible), sunscreen, snacks, Gatorade, bug spray, water balloons and other camp-appropriate supplies.
Donations may be dropped off at Kentucky State Police Post 15, 1118 Jamestown St. in Columbia. Monetary donations are also welcome. For more information, contact Trooper Houk by calling 270-384-4796.
Donations are requested by June 11.
