Two people die in early morning house fire

The Adair County Coroner’s Office was called out to a structure fire at 1776 Bull Run Rd. early Sunday morning.

The Adair County Fire Department had been battling its second blaze of the night, with the first fire reported to have taken place on Hwy. 55 south of Columbia.

A call to a second fire came about midnight to Bull Run Rd., where two people were found deceased after firefighters fought to control the blaze that destroyed the home.

Coroner Sierra Durbin said Sunday that the bodies have been taken to the Medical Examiner’s office in Louisville for identification.

While names have not been officially released, the Community Voice has learned that David Collins, who served as District 7 Constable after being appointed last year, and Charlotte Keezer resided at the residence. Their families have been notified.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Adair County Coroner’s Office are investigating.

Also during the fire, a firefighter was injured after a chimney fell on him. He received medical care but is said to be in good condition.

UPDATE FROM ADAIR COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT PIO GRANT LOY:

 
On 11/24/2024, Columbia Adair County Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 00:18 hours to 1776 Bull Run Road on a report of a structure fire that was fully engulfed & 911 caller was unsure if anyone was at home. 
 
Upon arrival firefighters found a fully engulfed two story structure on fire with three vehicles in the driveway & one of the vehicles being on fire. Firefighters then conducted a defensive attack on this fire and kept the fire contained to the original structure. 
 
Once the fire was cooled down & having communicated with family and neighbors in the area, it was determined that there were two people unaccounted for. Firefighters then completed extensive overhaul on the home and located two bodies within the home. 
 
 While on scene, there was one firefighter injured, the firefighter was transported by Adair County EMS to TJ Health Columbia for non life threatening injuries. The firefighter has since been released from the hospital. 
 
There were a total of 17 firefighters on scene for approximately 5 hours. The scene was turned over to The Adair County Coroner's Office.
