Adair County High School continued the tradition of academic competition excellence in Governor’s Cup Region competition on Feb. 18 at Bowling Green High School with a pair of regional championships to add to their collection.
The Future Problem Solving team grabbed first place once again and advanced to state finals with their championship effort. The ACHS Future Problem Solving team has now advanced to state finals eight years in a row, one of only three schools in the state to claim that achievement.
Heather Jackson, junior, captured an individual regional championship in Language Arts. Jackson’s score in both Language Arts and Arts and Humanities earns her a slot at Governor’s Cup State Finals.
Kyle Mann placed fifth in social Studies. This was Mann’s first state qualification in the event. The team has advanced to state in the social studies competition in the last seven out of eight years.
The Quick Recall team took third place overall. The team started with the most difficult bracket to work through during the day, facing off against the highest rated teams in the region in each round.
In round one, the team started as the talk of the tournament by getting out to an amazing 21-1 lead at the end of the first half against 2011 region runners-up Barren County. After defeating Barren, Adair won against their next opponent, South Warren, by a margin of 16 points. In a head-to-head with Bowling Green High School and Glasgow High School, the team fell just short of state finals qualification, losing by only one question to Bowling Green in a very competitive match.
Future Problem Solving members taking home the regional championship were Emmalee Baker, Roslin Wilson, Kyle Castaneda, and Sarah McQuaide. Fellow FPS members Abby Walker, Leane Blackwelder and Amber Turner comprised the remaining members of the FPS squad preparing for regional championships.
Quick Recall starters included Eddie Franklin, Kyle Mann, Heather Jackson, and Matt Rogers. Accompanying the Quick Recall team and their bid to Region were Timothy Watson, Katherine Blackwelder, Brittany Curry, Jessi Taylor, Anna Parson, Laura Akin, Jesse Woods, Cody Giles and Landon Coomer.
Governor’s Cup state finals are held in Lexington at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on March 10-12.
