Adair County High School staff and administrators hosted a luncheon in the school gymnasium Friday for approximately 250 students who met their benchmarks to qualify as college and/or career ready. Principal Troy Young grilled hotdogs for attendees, and sides, drinks, and desserts were served in the gym’s lobby. Students were given almost two hours to eat and socialize in the gym before returning to class.
“This is the culmination of a lot of work from both our students and our teachers,” Young says. “Anytime you can give kids an incentive, we try to do that. This isn’t a lot, but every little bit counts and the students seem to enjoy it.”
ACHS saw its number of students meeting the CCR qualifications grow once again this year, up almost 70 students from the previous school year. “We’re very proud that our numbers continue to increase,” says college and career readiness counselor Robin Loy. “We’re striving to be a school of excellence and we’ve got a lot of great students helping us get there.”
Vice Principal Travis Gay says it’s important to show students their efforts are noticed and appreciated. “We just want to do something as a reward for students to thank them and congratulate them for their work toward college and career readiness,” Gay says.
Young also wishes to thank the ACHS cafeteria cooks and staff for their help in preparing food and setting up the serving tables. “We owe a big ‘thank you’ to them because without their help this wouldn’t have been possible,” Young says.
