Columbia City Police are conducting a death investigation after a body was discovered in a pickup truck in the parking lot of Grider Apartments at the corner of Fairground and Young streets.

Police had been on the scene for a couple of hours as of 1:30 p.m. and had still not removed the body. Officer Brad Scholl said the scene was being treated as a death investigation and they had not yet determined the cause of death. Fingerprints were taken from the outside of the truck before it was forced open by officers, a step that is standard in an investigation where cause of death has yet to be determined, Scholl said.

Once the body is removed, it will be taken to Louisville for an autopsy to determine cause of death and for formal identification. Coroner Todd Akin said he believed the body had been there for five to seven days. He had not yet confirmed gender or identification.
