The No. 5-ranked Lindsey Wilson men’s tennis team cruised to an 8-1 win over No. 19 Campbellsville (Ky.) on Wednesday at the Kelly Hall Tennis Complex.
The Blue Raiders (12-2, 4-0 MSC) have now won the past 10 matches, four of which came against opponents either ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.
Lindsey Wilson was able to jump out to a 3-0 lead after capturing the three doubles points, but not without a fight from the Tigers (8-4, 2-1 MSC).
Denis Porcic and Raul Mendez grabbed the first points of the day after an 8-4 win at the No. 2 position over Sebastian Marot and Zach Baulch. The fourth-ranked doubles pairing of Edberg Espinoza and Francisco Charters then won 8-6 at the top doubles position over Alejandro Soriano and Vladyslav Ladygin.
At the No. 3 doubles position, Pablo Vilches and Ignacio Huertas found themselves trailing big to Nathan Boniel and Parker Jones. The Blue Raider duo were down 7-3 before rolling off six-straight points to come from behind and win 9-7 and capture the third doubles point.
Espinoza, who ranks No. 4 in the individual ITA national rankings, scored the first points of singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 18-ranked Soriano at the top position.
Mendez then captured the fifth and decisive point with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Boniel at the No. 3 position to mathematically seal the match.
Porcic defeated Ladygin 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles and Huertas won 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 position.
The lone Tiger point on the day came at the No. 4 position as Marot defeated Charters 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (6). Vilches completed the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 6 position.
The Blue Raiders now host St. Catharine (Ky.) on Saturday at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
