The Adair County High School Marching Band capped an outstanding season Saturday night by capturing the 2026 Kentucky Music Educators Association Class AAA State Marching Band Championship.
Performing its 2026 production, “Out of Your Shell,” approximately 60 students took the field at Western Kentucky University on Saturday and brought home the state title after months of preparation, competition and countless hours of practice.
The championship was the culmination of a season that included multiple competition victories, individual caption awards and the band’s first regional championship since 2018.
Adair County’s championship run began at the Governor’s Gold Cup in Elizabethtown, where the band earned the Chuck Smith Grand Champion title. The Indians also took first place in Class AAA and first place overall in preliminary competition, along with Best Percussion and Best Color Guard.
During finals, the band received awards for Musical Performance, Visual Performance, General Effect, Percussion and Color Guard, sharing the Visual Performance honor with Taylor County.
The success continued at the Lincoln Invitational, where Adair County earned first place in Class AAA, Best Percussion and Best Color Guard. The band also received overall honors for Best Color Guard, Visual Performance and General Effect.
The Indians traveled to Hopkinsville for the Western Kentucky Tournament of Champions, where they finished first in Class AAA and third overall. Adair County swept the Class AAA performance captions, earning first place in Music Performance, Visual Performance and General Effect, along with Best Percussion and Best Color Guard.
The band added another championship at the KMEA Class AAA West Regional competition at Franklin-Simpson High School. The regional victory marked Adair County’s first since 2018 and secured the band’s spot in the state semifinals.
One week later, the Indians finished what they had worked toward all season, earning the Class AAA state championship.
While the awards and accomplishments reflect the band’s success, the championship represents much more than competition results.
Behind the performances were months of summer practices, long rehearsals, travel, preparation and the dedication of students who continued working to improve throughout the season. From perfecting musical passages to refining marching formations, the students put in the work required to compete at the highest level.
The accomplishment also reflects the support of band directors, instructional staff, parents, families, the Adair County Band Boosters, volunteers, local businesses, sponsors and community members. Supporters played an important role in making the season possible.
“For the band’s seniors, the championship provides a memorable ending to their competitive marching careers. After years of rehearsals, performances and friendships, they finished their final season as Kentucky state champions,” said Director Jonathon Holmes
“For younger members, the accomplishment sets an example of what dedication, teamwork and perseverance can achieve,” he said.
The championship adds another chapter to Adair County’s marching band tradition and gives students, families, alumni and the community another reason to take pride in the program.
This season was about more than bringing home trophies. It was about the commitment of the students, the people who stood behind them and the community that supported them along the way.
