Assault at ACHS caught on video

The mother of an Adair County High School student released this video to the press this week after she believed school officials were not taking the attack on her son seriously. The video was first released to LEX18.

The assault occurred last Tuesday when Denver Austin's son was in the lunchroom at ACHS.

Police are investigating the case and Superintendent Alan Reed said the school district is asking that the most severe penalties available be applied in the case, which he calls a premeditated assault. Reed said video from a camera at the school shows the assailant walking up to the victim and there were no words exchanged or altercation before the assault shown in the video took place.

"It looked like it was well planned and there wasn’t any second thought about it," Reed said.

The victim's mother, Denver Austin, said her son suffered a serious concussion and is still undergoing tests and is under the care of a physician. Austin said she did not know the extent of the assault until someone sent her a copy of the video the night of the incident. She went to the school the next day and talked with Principal Troy Young, who acted as though the incident were minor, she said. Young was not available for comment Tuesday.

A complete story will be available in Thursday's Community Voice.
