Car goes airborne, lands on two vehicles; driver arrested

Adair County Sheriff Deputy Aaron Rainwater was dispatched to a vehicle accident with injuries Wednesday at 3:42 p.m.

Byron Firkins, age 21, of Columbia, was operating a 2000 Honda west on West Kentucky 80 when he traveled off the left shoulder of the road. The vehicle then traveled approximately 80 yards through a field where Firkins was ejected from the vehicle.

The vehicle then traveled on where it ran through a storage building. After running through the building the vehicle went air borne, landing on top of a 1992 Chevrolet Z71 pick-up and a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox SUV (belonging to Frances Salyer’s of Columbia) that were parked in the D & F Grocery parking lot.

Firkins's vehicle came to rest on top of the vehicles. Firkins was treated on scene by Adair County EMS but refused transport. Firkins was then arrested and charged with operating motor vehicle under influence of drugs/alcohol 1st offence, operating motor vehicle on suspended/revoked operators license, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.  Firkins was lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail.

Deputy Rainwater was assisted on scene by Detective Jamie Richards KSP and Jason Rector Adair County Constable.
