Hunter Cundiff, a lifelong Adair Countian, has been hired as head coach of the high school girls’ basketball team. Cundiff has been an assistant coach of the boys’ high school team for the past three seasons.
“I’ve been looking forward to being a head coach for many years now and I am very fortunate to have gotten this position,” said Cundiff.
The team is in a good position for this season. Losing only one senior, Cundiff has a lot of returning point scorers with a young varsity team. Last year, the team finished 17-13 and were district runner ups.
“If everybody, you know, plays their role, we are looking at a very talented, very good squad this year,” he said.
Cundiff describes his coaching style as being more focused on defense.
“I will fit our offensive style to our group…to me, I am more of a defensive minded coach,” he said.
As far as coaching, Cundiff said “Just the day-to-day stuff, Deron Breeze has been a huge influence on me for that. Before him, hearing about the 1992 team from my mom [Amy Keys] and Coach Goodin, that was a big influence on me wanting to step into this role.”
“Just my outlook on basketball altogether, the biggest influence would be my mom. Her success she had here back in the 90s. She is a part of the thousand-point club up here, part of the Hall of Fame from that ’92 team just that influence has been major on me” he said.
Cundiff is a graduate of Adair County High School and Lindsey Wilson College and played basketball for both teams. Currently, he is in his second year as a special education teacher at Adair County High School.
The girls’ basketball season will officially start on Oct. 15 with tryouts and practices. They will participate in two pre-season scrimmages with the first official game being on December 2 at home against Cumberland County.
