Indians golf reaches midpoint of season with strong results

The Adair County High School boys’ golf team has reached the halfway point of its season, and coach Zach Madewell said the Indians have continued to improve while facing tough competition.
Adair County has recorded three second-place finishes this season while competing in tournaments against strong teams from across the region.
“We’ve played really well this year. We’ve played in a lot harder tournaments against some really big competition,” Madewell said.
The Indians have had a busy start to the season. The team began practicing July 15 and played its first tournament just five days later on July 20. Since then, Adair County has competed in 10 tournaments in 19 days.
That schedule has given the team plenty of opportunities to compete and gain experience against quality competition.
The strong start continued Saturday at the Raider Invitational, where Carson Coomer earned an individual victory after winning a six-hole playoff.
“It’s a good season. It’s a very good season. They still have lots more potential and I’m hoping by the end of the year that they are where they should be,” Madewell said.
Adair County has 15 high school golfers and seven middle school golfers participating in the program this season.
While the high school team plays a full schedule, the middle school team has a more limited schedule of approximately 10 matches because of the smaller number of middle school golf programs available to compete against.
The Indians have also already secured representation at the Class 2A state championship. Kaden Burton and Coomer have qualified for the 2A championship, which is scheduled for Sept. 14 in Owensboro.
Madewell said the team’s early-season competition should help prepare the Indians for the challenges ahead as the season progresses toward postseason play.
