Edward Stickel, 42, of Columbia, died Saturday after being shot in the chest.

Stickel was at the residence of Ralph Mercer, 60, 156 Popular Court, discussing the purchase of a firearm when the negotiation led to a disagreement, according to Kentucky State Police.

Stickel allegedly pointed a gun at Mercer who then fired one round from a gun in his possession, striking Stickel in the chest.

Mercer then called 911 to report the incident. Stickel was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Adair County sheriff’s office was the first on the scene around 9 p.m.

Kentucky State Police also responded and Det. Russell Decker is heading up the investigation.

Charges have not been filed at this time pending completion of the investigation and a grand jury hearing. An autopsy was performed on Monday at the medical examiner’s office in Louisville.

Adair EMS and the coroner’s office also responded to the scene.
