Kentucky State Police Investigates Fatal Collision in Meade County

MULDRAUGH, Ky.  (Dec. 5, 2023) – Kentucky State Police (KSP) responded to a two-vehicle collision in Meade Co. late Monday night that resulted in a fatality.  

On Dec. 4, at approximately 11:15 P.M. EST, KSP Post 4 received a call from the Meade Co. Sheriff’s Office requesting assistance in investigating a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of US 31W and Old Mill Road (KY 1638) in Muldraugh. 

The preliminary investigation revealed that Kristian Cottrell, 18, of Guston, was operating a Ford Focus southbound on US 31W when he ran the red light at the Old Mill Road intersection and struck a Ford Econoline van head-on. At the time of the collision, the van was sitting stationary in the northbound turning lane, attempting to turn left onto Old Mill Road. The van was being operated by Denise Thompson, 52, of Brandenburg. 

Cottrell was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Meade Co. Coroner’s Office. Thompson was flown to the University of Louisville Hospital with life-threatening injuries. 

Traffic was affected on US 31W for several hours to allow troopers to reconstruct the collision. KSP Post 4 was assisted at the scene by the Meade Co. Sheriff’s Office, Meade Co. EMS, and the Meade Co. Coroner’s Office. The collision remains under investigation by reconstructionist Tpr. Kevin Dreisbach.
