SPRINGFIELD, Ky. – Mercedes Cox scored a game-high 23 points and Katie Keltner netted 21 as the Adair County Lady Indians pummeled host Washington County 70-43 on Saturday.
Adair County’s senior guard tandem of Cox and Keltner was strong throughout the non-district matchup.
Adair County, under the direction of Head Coach James Turner, posted its second straight win, improving to 15-7 in the process.
Washington County sustained its second-straight loss, slipping to 9-9.
The Lady Indians led Washington County, a team from the neighboring 19th District, following the end of each quarter. Adair County pushed its lead out to a safe double digit advantage after intermission.
The Lady Indians outscored Washington County 15-10 in the opening quarter. After not faring as well in the second quarter, Adair County settled for a 25-22 lead at halftime.
The Lady Indians forced the Washington County girls to play from behind throughout the second half. Adair County controlled the third quarter, doubling up Washington County 26-13 to push its lead out to double figures.
Freshman guard/forward Beth Owens accompanied Cox and Keltner in double figures, adding 11 points for the Lady Indians.
Narrowly missing double figures, junior guard Kassidi Taylor tossed in nine points for Adair County in the convincing win.
Freshman guard Alex Keltner and sophomore forward/center Smock rounded out the Adair County scoring with four and two points, respectively.
Adair County remained in the win column following a district victory over Taylor County four days earlier.
Senior center Kenya Turner paced Washington County with a team-high 16 points. Turner was the only player from Washington County to reach double figures in the scoring column. Junior guard Riquel Logan scored eight points and freshman guard Taylor Eldridge added seven for the Commanderettes.
Freshman guard Nick Brizendine had six points, junior forward Jennifer Keene four and freshman point guard Lexi Thompson two for Washington County in the loss.
Adair County was visiting Green County on Tuesday. The Adair County-Green County girls’ basketball game ended too late to make this edition.
