The fifth-ranked Lindsey Wilson men’s tennis team clinched the Mid-South Conference regular season championship after defeating Cumberlands (Ky.) 8-1 Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders (17-2, 6-0 MSC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles competition.
Ignacio Huertas and Pablo Vilches defeated the Patriots’ (4-10, 2-3 MSC) Dev Sivam and Yusuke Matsuoka 8-0, while Denis Porcic and Raul Mendez beat Eduardo Cabrera and Daniel Butcher 8-1.
The fourth-ranked team of Edberg Espinoza and Francisco Charters teamed up to defeat Ariez Heshaam and Daniel Fraser 8-4 in the first position of doubles competition.
Cumberlands earned its lone point of the match by a forfeit in the sixth position in singles competition.
Lindsey Wilson’s No. 27 Porcic then defeated Cabrera 6-0, 6-2 in the second position of singles play. Mendez won his singles match 6-1, 6-2 over Adrian Elduque, followed by a 6-1, 6-4 win for Vilches over Marc Sanou.
No. 4 Espinoza defeated Heshaam 7-6, (7-3), 5-4 in the first position of singles play, while Huertas earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Fraser to wrap up the match.
The Blue Raiders return to action Tuesday when they travel to Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.).
