As a freshman, Ila Loy has already accomplished a milestone that no Adair County Lady Indians golfer had reached in 14 years, advancing to the final round of the state golf tournament and finishing tied for 42nd.
Loy shot an 83 in the first round and an 85 in the second, placing her in the top half of the field and gaining valuable experience competing against some of Kentucky’s top golfers.
Lady Indians coach Ashley Goodin, who was the last individual from Adair County to advance that far in the state tournament 14 years ago, said the experience gives Loy a foundation to build on as she continues her high school career.
“It was a good experience for her,” Goodin said. “We have more goals moving forward now that she knows what it’s like.”
Loy faced challenges throughout the tournament, including a difficult course setup, demanding playing conditions and the pressure of competing on the state stage.
Goodin said Loy had trouble getting off to a strong start on both days, making it difficult to overcome early setbacks.
Golf also presents a unique mental challenge, Goodin said, because players must work through difficulties on their own without timeouts, substitutions or teammates to pick up the slack.
“This sport is so mental, so golfers have to be able to adjust and work through struggles as they go,” Goodin said.
Despite the challenges, Goodin praised Loy for her composure and determination throughout the tournament.
“She handled it like a champ though as we all know she would,” Goodin said. “She’s very capable of rising to the challenge.”
Although Loy’s scores were not what she and her coach had hoped for, Goodin said her performance was respectable, particularly given the difficulty of the course and the limited experience Loy has had with those conditions.
For a freshman, reaching the final round provides an opportunity to learn what it takes to compete at the state level and identify areas for improvement heading into next season.
Goodin said Loy never gave up during the tournament and will use the experience as motivation to finish stronger next year.
Loy’s first state finals appearance marks a significant achievement for the Lady Indians program and gives the freshman a valuable starting point as she works toward future goals.
