LWC swimming team finishes second at mid-south conference

No. 9 Women’s Swimming places second at Mid-South Conference Championships

The ninth-ranked Lindsey Wilson women’s swimming team finished second out of six teams with 394 total points at the Mid-South Conference Championships hosted by Cumberlands (Ky.) Saturday.

The Blue Raiders finished 108 points behind No. 3-ranked Cumberlands who won the championship title with 586 total points. Laura Stephenson was the lone Blue Raider to earn All MSC honors on the day after winning the 100 yard butterfly event in a time of 58.65, three seconds faster than Campbellsville’s (Ky.) Bailey Foxworth. All individual and relay event winners earned All MSC honors for their respective event.

Tori Caudill earned a national ‘B’ standard in the 1650 yard freestyle event. Caudill finished in a career-best time of 19:33.52.

The Blue Raiders 200 yard medley relay team of Elena Nikolaeva, Courtney Fleeger, Stephenson and Kelsey Marshall earned 26 points to place second and earn a national ‘A’ standard with a time of 1:55.57. The Patriots won the event in a time of 1:50.64 earning 32 total points.

Fleeger tallied two individual top three placements on the day including a second-place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke clocking in at 2:35.34 to earn 13 team points. Fleeger also finished third in the 400 yard individual medley in a time of 4:50.02 accumulating 12 team points.

Cumberlands’ Victoria Tornelli won the 200 yard breaststroke event tallying 16 team points and finishing in a time of 2:29.47. Marshall totaled 12 team points and placed third in the 200 yard breaststroke event in a time of 2:36.94.

Nikolaeva accumulated 12 points for Lindsey Wilson after taking third with a time of 2:16.67 in the 200 yard backstroke event. Life’s (Ga.) Bailey Spivey won the 200 yard backstroke event in a time of 2:07.50 tallying 16 points for her squad.

In the 800 yard freestyle relay, the team of Fleeger, Marshall, Nikolaeva and Stephenson missed out on first place by just three seconds finishing in a time of 8:17.57. Cumberlands won the event to total 32 points for the Patriots.

The Blue Raiders relay team also placed second in the 400 yard freestyle event with a time of 3:49.61 tallying 26 points. The Patriots were victorious yet again winning the event in a time of 3:40.00 totaling 32 points.

Campbellsville came in third place at the championship with 266 total points and Life tallied 221 total points finishing fourth.

St. Catharine (Ky.) and Bethel (Tenn.) rounded out the field finishing fifth and sixth with 100 points and 63 points, respectively.

Life’s Spivey earned Freshman of the Year honors, while Cumberlands’ Charlotte Parent was named Swimmer of the Year.

Lindsey Wilson now prepares for the NAIA National Championships, which are set to take place in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on March 4-7.
