WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (KT) – Four inmates face additional charges following an escape from the Whitley County Jail and an attack that injured several deputy jailers, according to Kentucky State Police.

KSP’s London post received a call from Whitley County 911 about 11 p.m. Oct. 4 reporting that inmates had taken control of the jail, injured several deputy jailers and escaped. Charles Blake Randle, 42, of Springfield, was identified as the inmate who fled the facility.

Troopers helped jail staff and other local law enforcement officers secure the facility.

Investigators said four inmates — James Fields, 55, of Ashcamp; Roy Cox, 19, of Corbin; Anthony Tucker, 45, of Corbin; and Randle — waited for a deputy jailer to open a cell door during patrol, then held it open.

Randle, Cox and Fields entered the jail’s control room, where police said they attacked several deputy jailers. One suffered serious head injuries after being struck with a mop bucket. Another was stabbed with a pencil, and a third was sprayed in the face with pepper spray.

Randle escaped and remained at large for about 24 hours before troopers located him and took him into custody.

Cox, Fields and Randle each were charged with three counts of first-degree assault on a police officer, three counts of attempted murder and one count of first-degree attempted escape.

Tucker was charged with three counts of complicity to commit first-degree assault on a police officer, three counts of complicity to commit attempted murder and one count of first-degree attempted escape.

Whitley County EMS transported the injured deputy jailers to Baptist Health Corbin and the University of Kentucky Hospital. They were treated and later released.

KSP continues to investigate.
